On the morning of Sunday 05 February, Bishop Richard Chartres came to St Mellitus College to speak to our ordinands about his time as the Bishop of London. Bishop Richard was interviewed by our President, Bishop Graham Tomlin, who described Bishop Richard as the 'Father of the College'. A wide-ranging discussion ensued, including details of the vision that lay behind the launch of St Mellitus College and the value Bishop Richard places on the way we prepare men and women for ordained ministry. Bishop Richard also spoke about his hopes for the future of the College, thereby inspiring staff and students to continue the good work that he has helped to shape. There was also an opportunity for students to ask questions to the Bishop.
As a token of our heartfelt gratitude, the Dean of St Mellitus College, Revd Dr Andy Emerton, presented a parting gift to Bishop Richard. Andy was assisted by our Senior Students, who presented two pear trees to the Bishop. Our hope is that these trees will serve as a fitting reminder of how the College has flourished under his patronage. After a lengthy standing ovation, Bishop Richard presided at our College Eucharist.
It was a privilege to have Bishop Richard with us on Sunday, and it was a great way to give thanks for his ten years of loving support to the staff and students of St Mellitus College. We are deeply thankful and we will miss him greatly.
