Ordained Pioneer Ministry

St Mellitus College’s Full-Time Church-Based Ordination training pathway is ideal for those training for Ordained Pioneer Ministry. The programme was originally designed with the needs of Pioneers, in mind. The combination of academic study alongside work in a placement context – a parish, church plant, missional or Fresh Expression of church – is well suited for those training in Pioneering contexts as OPMs.

OPM candidates can study for a Diploma or BA Theology, Ministry and Mission validated by Durham University, our MA Christian Leadership validated by Middlesex University, or an MA Theology, Ministry and Mission validated by Durham University

Aspects of the programme particularly suitable for OPM candidates are:

  • Regular gatherings and input for OPMs at residential weekends, led by some of our staff team with experience of Fresh Expressions and Church Planting, to share experiences and wisdom and also receive external input focused in particular on aspects of entrepreneurial and pioneering approaches to mission ministry.

  • Aspects of the afternoon Healthy Church Leadership Programme cover issues particularly relevant to OPM candidates, such as Communicating Vision, Building Teams, Missional Parishes and Change Management.

  • Placement contexts can be in a pioneer context. The full-time programme includes carrying out a small scale piece of research to explore a key question around an area of their mission and ministry in their placement context.

  • Modules within the undergraduate programme include ‘Leadership and Theology for Ministry and Mission’ which focusses on a variety of aspects of leadership, 'Mission and Apologetics in Contemporary Culture', and 'Evangelism in Practice'.

  • Modules within the MA in Christian Leadership include ‘Contemporary Christian Leadership’ and ‘Theology of Power’

  • A dissertation module (either undergraduate or postgraduate) which could be focussed around a theological exploration of particular aspects of pioneer ministry

  • The option of attending a highly regarded Church Planting course, run by the Right Revd Ric Thorpe, Bishop of Islington and Tutor in Church Planting.
