Beginning Theology
Would you love to study theology, or feel called to Christian leadership but are hesitant to start? Maybe you are put off by a sense that you haven’t done much further study since school days, or English is not your first language? Maybe you just want to improve your English so you can communicate the gospel more clearly where you live and work? If any of this describes you, then ‘Beginning Theology’ might just be what you need.
‘Beginning Theology’ is an exciting new course designed to provide an accessible route into theological study. It offers students an opportunity to explore the Christian faith and to develop the essential academic skills for study in Higher Education.
The two year programme enables students to study the Bible, the Christian tradition, worship and the Sacraments. It encourages students to consider their faith in the light of contemporary issues and prepares them for mission and ministry.
The course provides optional weekly tutorials with a specialist English Language tutor for students whose first language is not English.
Students who complete the course will gain a course certificate. A formal report on a student’s academic progress and potential can be provided by the College for submission to Ministry Division if a candidate is sponsored by a Diocese for selection for Reader or ordination training.

The Bishop of London Richard Chartres
“At a time when fragmentation and partisanship can appear to threaten the credibility and effectiveness of our ministry, St Mellitus represents a bold step of faith and trust. We believe that as we pursue the harder path of unity in diversity, the College will prove to be an instrument of the Spirit in equipping the whole people of God to proclaim the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The Bishop of Chelmsford John Gladwin
“The establishment of St Mellitus College is an exciting development for Chelmsford Diocese. It offers us new opportunities to develop theological and ministerial education to assist us in the mission of the Gospel in our time.”
The Dean Revd Dr Graham Tomlin
“St Mellitus College is a very exciting place to work. It brings together students from across the spectrum of the church to learn about and prepare for mission in the contemporary world, in a way that tries to be open to the Spirit of God and learning from each other. We have a fantastic group of students, a great staff team and it is a privilege to be part of it.”
